EXETER NEWS: New and improved rail stations set to boost Exeter
Improvements to existing stations and the creation of new ones look set to boost Exeter’s economy and housing values, and make travel easier for residents.
St Thomas, one of the city’s 10 suburban stations, is now enjoying improved platforms, better shelters, modern lighting and CCTV being installed in a project jointly funded by First Great Western and Devon and Exeter councils.
An announcement will be made in May on the opening date of the much-delayed Cranbrook station linking and new housing developments there with the city centre. At the same time there should be news of the completion of Newcourt station – a long-awaited extra stop located between Topsham and Digby & Sowton on the Avocet Line rail service.
Meanwhile Exeter council has welcomed a plan by the neighbouring Mid Devon authority to consider reopening Cullompton railway station. Exeter’s leaders say this would make it easier for more shoppers to visit the city.
