LETTINGS NEWS: Government ends confusion over ‘private tenant subletting’
The government has tried to defuse tensions over a bid to allow private rental tenants to sub-let their flats and houses.
The small print of documents released after last month’s Budget suggested that the government, if re-elected, will make it legal for tenants to be able to sublet. However, housing minister Brandon Lewis has now clarified the issue.
He says he wants tenants to be entitled by law to sublet in the future, but “with landlords having the right of refusal offering reasons for that decision and within a reasonable time frame.” Many tenancies already explicitly forbid subletting and these will not need to change under any new law, Lewis says.
