LETTINGS NEWS: Helpline for landlords fitting fire and carbon monoxide alarms
Landlords now have only just over four months to ensure they have installed working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in their properties.
The government says an average of 36 deaths and 1,375 injuries occur each year because of the absence of such alarms.
Specifically, from October 1 landlords must fit a smoke alarm on each storey of a rental property, and must fit a carbon monoxide alarm in any room that contains a solid fuel appliance.
Local fire brigades have been asked to handle any queries and Devon & Somerset Fire Service says individual letting agents or landlords can contact its Community Safety Protection Department on 01392 87220. More details are on ww.dsfire.gov.uk.
Local authority trading standards departments have been given the power to levy £5,000 fines on landlords not complying with the law from October 1.
