LETTINGS NEWS: More confusion over new eviction rules

There has been yet more confusion over new regulations which change the power of landlords to evict tenants using the so-called Section 21 notice.

A new law was meant to come in from October 1 making it illegal for landlords, or letting agents acting on their behalf, to issue the standard Section 21 eviction notice if a tenant has made what is deemed a “reasonable” request for repairs.

However, property industry experts have now told the government there are conflicting details in the drafting of the new law, and Whitehall has agreed to reword it.

It is not known whether this can be done before October 1 so it is possible the deadline may be put back. The advice to landlords must be to seek the advice of a letting agent on this increasingly complex measure.
