SALES NEWS: Do second homes destroy rural communities?

06/10/14

A discussion about second home owners is guaranteed to generate heated debate, particularly in the South West. And now the issue is about to be brought to the forefront with the arrival of a three-part documentary fronted by actress Penelope Keith focusing on the effects of second homes on rural Britain. Ms Keith is best remembered for her roles in ‘To the Manor Born’ and ‘The Good Life’.

The programme is due to screen on More 4 later in the autumn and comes as Lib Dem MP Andrew George – a St Ives resident and long-time opponent of second homes – has repeated his call for the government to address tax loopholes exploited by second home owners. “Local estate agencies often show that four times more local homes are sold to second home buyers as to first time buyers. I have long argued for a planning regulation to cap the number of second homes but both Labour and Conservative Ministers have thwarted my efforts….so far” he said.
