Selling a second home? A tax change is coming…

20 February 2020 Latest News

Accountants and financial advisers are warning anyone selling a second home in the near future to take careful note of a tax change. The Capital Gains Tax payable will not change but the deadline for payment is much tighter after April 6 2020. So…

  • until April, the seller must pay CGT by January 31 in the year after the sale;
  • that means currently a seller has potentially many months to pay, but…
  • from April 6 the CGT must be paid within 30 days of the sale completing.

This appears a relatively technical change but if the seller of a holiday home or buy to let property ignores the new rule, they could be fined the equivalent of five per cent of all the Capital Gains Tax they have to pay, on top of the tax itself of course. If you have any concerns or would like to discuss how this affects you, please do give our lettings experts a call.
