Why a rise in the number of mortgage loans is good news

One important figure for the housing market concerns mortgage lending to buyers. A rise or fall in lending now, shows how the market will be in some months’ time once those buyers havechosen homes to move to. So the good news is…

• there’s been an increase, with 63,000 loans to buyers across the UK in May;
• this is the first rise since December last year; and
• it comes ahead of interest rate cuts expected in the second half of 2025.

It normally takes a few months for the rise in loans to reflect in the market – so buckle up, as this suggests that buyers will be out in force this autumn.
